Children and Young People's Partnership in Somerset (CHYPPS)
Welcome to the CHYPPS website
Who are we?
CHYPPS is a membership organisation that represents and supports the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) working with children and young people across Somerset. Our role is to ensure that our membership, and statutory sector partners, are able to access information on services, developments, funding and training opportunities across the children and young people’s sector.
We believe in working together to provide children in Somerset with effective services, greater opportunities and better support.
CHYPPS Update from Janet
We are also on the move again – back to Langport! We will be leaving Westonzoyland at the end of the month and will be taking an office at The Town Hall which is where ViSTA is based. Our new address is shown at the end of this news circular – we have not had our new telephone number confirmed yet.
Although we are leaving The Old School, we are very pleased to say that another local voluntary organisation (and CHYPPS member) is moving in – Ups and Downs South West. See below and attached details of their 2010 Conference.
We have also said “Goodbye” to Vivian Upton who stepped down as Chair of CHYPPS on 31st August. We are all very grateful for the unstinting support Vivian has given to us over the years and hope she enjoys her retirement from CHYPPS. We are, however, very pleased to welcome Pat Parker who is taking over as Chairman and look forward to working with him.

New value test for charities
The think tank New Philanthropy Capital has released a paper Proving Your Worth to Whitehall which encourages charities to prove their value to the deficit-cutting government. The paper uses the nine questions the Treasury will ask every Whitehall department to answer during the autumn spending review, and applies them to a charity. They include whether an activity provides substantial economic value and whether it is essential for meeting government priorities.

Fair Play for Children
Fair Play for Children have released a report Out with the Bathwater? This report looks at the government's proposal to review the Vetting and Barring scheme - the scheme set up by the previous government to protect children, vulnerable adults and those who work with them. The report looks at how CRB checks and the new scheme emerged, asks some key questions, and makes radical recommendations.
