This is a practical workshop for funding advisors and development workers, demonstrating the many features of Funding Central (including interactive tools).
In these uncertain economic times, there are many funding and finance opportunities to tap into, but where are they and how can frontline groups access them?
Funding Central is a dynamic website enabling charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises to search for funding from thousands of funding and finance opportunities, covering grants, contracts and loan finance from national, regional and local sources – it is free to register and there is no charge to access its tools and resources.
Funding Central is designed to support delegates' important work with frontline organisations helping them to develop and implement sustainable income strategies appropriate to their needs. The site makes life easier by bringing together a range of practical guides, tools, information and real life case studies in one memorable place.
This session is designed to ensure that users get the most out of Funding Central, regardless of their level of experience using the site. As Funding Advisors and Development Workers, the tools and resources on Funding Central are designed for delegates to use with organisations as they search for opportunities, asking them to think beyond the next pot of money and plan now to ensure their future.
In this practical workshop, delegates will register (or get the most out of their registration), create their personal page, use the Guided and Advanced Searched, know how to find potential partners, use a range of interactive tools and access support and advice. There will also be the opportunity to feedback experiences with frontline groups, ask questions and contribute ideas about Funding Central.
If you are a frontline organisation, please refer to the events titled “Funding Central: Searching for suitable and sustainable funding” in your area listed on Funding Central.

FREE social enterprise conference in Glastonbury on 17th September.

Programme
Grassroots Glastonbury - a first for Somerset!
Almost every day we hear news of yet another company making huge profits or awarding big fat bonuses to bosses who fail. The public are understandably feeling sick and tired of hearing about private sector profits made at the expense of hard working ordinary people, but it doesn’t have to be like this!
An alternative business model – and one which is growing fast – is the social enterprise model. A social enterprise is a business, but one that is run for the benefit of all the stakeholders, not just investors. A social enterprise rewards employees adequately, but not excessively, and reinvests surplus profits in the local community, or society at large through helping others.
Raising awareness of how this works is the job of ‘GRASSROOTS,’ a one day conference expected to attract up to 200 prospective and active social enterprise leaders and invited guests from across the region on Friday 17th September, in Glastonbury.
Businesses across Somerset and beyond involved with or interested in social enterprise or creating an ethical, responsible, community based trade will benefit by attending.
The day has been organised to raise awareness, provide useful new contacts and show how the ‘not-for-private-profit’ business sector is remaining resilient in these tough economic conditions. Lessons learnt and advice on how to cut costs by improving your business’s environmental policies will be shared.
GRASSROOTS conference places are currently being offered free. Please visit www.somerset.coop (opens in a new window) for more information and a booking form.
We look forward to seeing you at GRASSROOTS GLASTONBURY!

Recycled Steel and Wire Sculpture at Carymoor… the Natural Way
On Saturday 25th September, Carymoor Environmental Centre will be holding an Open Day featuring the exciting premier viewing of a newly installed Carymoor sculpture, an exciting intergenerational art project which has been running over the Summer. Art work from the workshops will also be on display at Carymoor’s Open Day as part of Somerset Art Weeks.
Combined with one of Carymoor’s quarterly nature days, entitled ‘Goats, Tigers and Elephants – a celebration of Somerset’s Moths,’ it promises to be a fun-filled event for the whole family.
Initially instigated by Somerset Art Works via ‘The Company of Voices’ intergenerational project, led by CHYPPS and inspired by the magic of Carymoor, sculptor Fiona Campbell
led a series of taster and workshop sessions involving groups of volunteers from different age groups. In addition to making individual pieces, all participants contributed to the creation of a large recycled steel and wire sculpture depicting a dragonfly emerging from a nymph cast. This 3 metre piece will be suspended over the beautiful pond area in the Carymoor sensory garden. The sculpture will not only be a visual delight but will also help to educate future visitors of all ages about sustainability and the benefits of recycling that are at the heart of Carymoor’s philosophy.
The day also offers a beginner's exploration of the weird and wonderful world of moths and their caterpillars, looking at which moths have arrived in the moth trap overnight, with a walk of the site to highlight the plants most useful to them. There will also be moth-themed family-friendly activities going on in and around the centre and fun quizzes for children.
A wonderful opportunity to visit the Centre, there will be refreshments available, including homemade soup from the gardens and Julia’s delicious homemade cakes. The Centre will be open between 10am and 2pm. For more information email info@carymoor.org.uk or phone 01963 350143.

"Bullying happens everywhere - at the park, in school, lessons, on the
way home, on buses, it is everywhere, it happens to me every day”
(14 yr old male with emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties)
Over recent years, the Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) has become
increasingly aware of how bullying in the wider community can impact on
the well-being of children and young people.
To support local practitioners with the new DCSF Safe from Bullying
guidance on tackling bullying in a range of community settings, the TDA
has organised a one-day conference to be held in Taunton on the 15 June
at Somerset College of Arts and Technology.
The event will give delegates the opportunity to work together to
explore the following issues and practice related to anti-bullying work
in their settings:
- What is bullying? - Rhiannon Prys-Owen (Anti-Bullying Alliance)
AIMS: To establish the definition of bullying; the forms that it takes
and the impact on children and young people
- Cyberbullying - Alan Earle (South West Grid for Learning)
AIMS: To raise awareness of cyberbullying, the forms it takes and to
explore prevention, law and resources
- Equalities - Jono Madeley (Children’s Service Plymouth City
Council)
AIM: To explore ways to embed the Equalities legislation, identify
vulnerable groups e.g. homophobic bullying and share ways of working
- Children and young people’s participation: The key to successful
anti-bullying work - Fiona Phur (Regional Youth Work Unit at Learning
South West)
AIM: To explore how children’s and youth participation can inform, drive
and evaluate anti-bullying work
- Developing an anti-bullying policy - Teresa Bliss (Gloucestershire
Children’s Services)
AIM: To outline the process of developing an anti-bullying policy and
consider what this policy should be.
