Dormant bank accounts

Simon Hughes, co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Youth Affairs, has told CYP Now he intends to hold talks with ministers imminently to clarify whether money from dormant bank accounts is still destined for new youth facilities. The previous government enshrined a commitment to investing money from dormant bank accounts into youth facilities in law. But the new government has promised community organisations and neighbourhood groups access to the money, under the banner of the big society bank, raising concerns in the youth sector that the existing legislation may be undermined or altered.

Appeal to CHYPPS’ members

Somerset Wildlife Trust are looking for potential partners to work alongside in order to deliver a National Citizenship Service programme to young people in Somerset.    Somerset Wildlife Trust could potentially provide community tasks for young people on nature reserves in any one of the phases from 2-5.

details: http://www.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/newsroom/news_releases/2010/100722-citizenservice/national-citizen-service.aspx (Opens in new window)

Somerset Wildlife Trust do not have residential capacity or have the networks to identify young people from diverse backgrounds.

Are any CHYPPS’ members thinking along similar lines – could something be put together in county that draws on the expertise of a number of organizations from across the county?

ContactPoint in Somerset is decommissioned

Over the next few weeks Steph Dingle (Senior Data Administrator) and I will be working together and with partner agencies to ensure that ContactPoint in Somerset is decommissioned in accordance with these pdf instructions.

The Coalition Government have made clear their intention to have an information sharing system in place to support the work of the Children and Young People’s Workforce. At the moment the Department of Education are engaged in a feasibility study and we are likely to hear more in the autumn. The new system will be non-universal and focussed on vulnerable children and young people who are at risk. I will keep you informed of developments as they unfold.

Families with Disabled Children

Contact a Family has published Counting the Costs 2010, the report of a survey which asked over 1,100 UK parents caring for a disabled child about their current financial situation. It shows that families with disabled children are going without essentials such as food and heating. This is the norm, not a temporary crisis brought on by the economic slump.
