More Than My Illness: Delivering quality care for young people with cancer is the second of two CLIC Sargent reports which examine the non-clinical needs of children and young people with cancer. This report focuses on young people aged 16-24 and their families, while the first in the series focused on the needs of children aged 0-18.

Youth tracker

The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has published the fourth edition of Youth Tracker, the quarterly newsletter looking at how Britain's young people are faring in the recession, and what organisations can do to support them. This edition of Youth Tracker focuses on what can be done to put young people having to decide on their next steps in life at the forefront of education and skills policy.

New therapy brings results for troubled young people

Re-offending in troubled and aggressive young people can be significantly cut using a pioneering new mental health approach known as Multisystemic Therapy, a UK conference was told this week. Reporting on the initial findings of the first UK evaluation pilot, researchers found in families with multiple problems that the use of Multisystemic Therapy reduced the risk of re-offending, particularly among boys.

Evidence of what works with young people

NCVYS members Fairbridge have published Back from the Brink: How Fairbridge transforms the lives of disadvantaged young people. The report brings together the results of three evaluative studies of Fairbridge's work over ten years and is based on a sample of 3200 individuals. It provides detailed evidence about what works for disadvantaged young people and demonstrates the empirical value of development work with young people.

Lifelong Learning UK has produced a useful factsheet outlining the new QCF qualifications for assessors and verifiers, which will be available from the 1st September.

Please note, that those holding current assessor qualifications, including the A and D units, will not need to undertake the new qualifications.

Mental health approach for young offenders

The Department of Health has published initial findings of the first UK evaluation pilot of a new mental health approach known as Multisystemic Therapy for young offenders. The evaluation found the pilot significantly reduced re-offending in troubled and aggressive young people. Multisystemic Therapy involves improving parenting capacity, increasing young people's engagement with education and training, reducing their offending behaviour, and tackling underlying health or mental health problems. The approach has been trialled across 10 sites in England and is supported jointly by the DfE, the Youth Justice Board and Department of Health.

Mentoring

Volunteering charity CSV and Lord Freud, Minister for Welfare Reform, have launched a new scheme of grandparent-style mentors to help troubled teenagers avoid turning to crime and designed to improve their prospects in life. Trained and screened senior volunteer mentors will be matched with young individuals aged between 14-19 particularly those not in education, employment or training.

ContactPoint

The Department for Education has written to directors of children's services on next steps for ContactPoint, the government database for under 18s, and guidance on interim operations. The Government has made clear its intention to end ContactPoint as soon as is practicable. In the meantime, while ContactPoint remains in use, its operations will be scaled down.

Young Person's Guarantee

Danny Alexander MP, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, has announced that the extension of the Young Person's Guarantee will not take place. The guarantee, which was first announced in last year's Budget, promises a job or training to every 18- to 24-year-old who has been out of work for six months or more. It was due to be extended into 2011/12 at a cost of £450m. Also included in the list of projects to be scrapped is the roll-out of the £290m Future Jobs Fund.

Big Society Plans

The Cabinet Office has unveiled its structural reform plan, which lays out a number of goals for supporting third sector organisations, including inviting Parliament to create a select committee for civil society, which is expected to be in place by November. It also says the planned Big Society Bank, which will provide capital for third sector organisations using money from dormant bank accounts, will start giving out funds by April.

Vetting and Barring Scheme

Home Secretary Theresa May has announced that registration with the Vetting and Barring Scheme (VBS) will be halted to allow the government to ‘remodel the scheme back to proportionate, common sense levels'. Voluntary registration with the VBS for new employees and those working or volunteering with children and vulnerable adults was due to start on 26 July 2010.
